Prepare for Your Global Health Rotation Before You Arrive Abroad.
Â
Before working in a low-resource medical setting, most students and residents are never formally taught how to prepare safely, ethically, and confidently.
In this free first lesson, Dr. Allan Martin shares the critical foundations every future global health clinician should understand before going abroad.

Why this matters
Â
Every year, medical students and residents enter global health rotations feeling underprepared for:
-
limited diagnostics
-
ethical dilemmas
-
communication barriers
-
unfamiliar healthcare systems
-
emergency decision-making in low-resource settings
Â
This lesson helps you begin preparing before you arrive abroad.
Â
THAT creates emotional relevance.
Meet your instructor
Dr. Fredrick Allan Martin
I’m Dr. Allan Martin, a Family Physician, Geriatrician, former U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander, and former Residency Director with more than four decades of clinical experience.
Over the years, I’ve helped train medical students and residents not only in clinical medicine, but in how to practice safely, ethically, and confidently in unfamiliar healthcare environments.
I’ve also led and worked alongside international medical teams in countries including Malawi, Honduras, and Nepal, where I saw firsthand how unprepared many trainees feel before entering low-resource settings.
That’s why I created this course:
to give future clinicians the practical preparation, guidance, and confidence I wish more students received before their first global health experience.
“Global health isn’t just something I teach; it’s shaped who I am. My goal is to help you prepare with confidence and serve with humility.”
